Thornæs Sofia
Thornæs Sofia, 4 YO, 49.4%
Another bottling from Thornæs Destilleri, Denmark. Cask filled 2020, matured in one virgin European (Bulgarian) oak cask and one ex-Oloroso sherry cask, then bottled 2024. Limited to 302 bottles. This is a lightly peated whisky.
The name Sofia is of course a nod to the capitol of Bulgaria; notice the use of Bulgarian oak.
The Thornæs Sofia is available to buy from the distillery at DKK 649.
Nose: A soft mix of wood smoke and toasted oak. Nuts and vanilla. Quite floral on the nose, almost perfume like. With time the perfume notes only increase.
Taste: Medium body. The perfume and the floral notes from the nose certainly do carry over to the palate. Accompanied by assorted spices and minty oakiness.
Finish: Medium long finish. Peppermint now, over soft wood smoke, mild spices and some oaky astringency. The floral notes are ever present. Very minty finish though.
Comment: A bit overwhelming in all its mintiness.
