Magnus Heinason Maritime Legacy - Third Release, 3 YO, 46 %
Here’s a collaboration between Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Named after the Faroese naval hero who safeguarded the waters of the Faroe Islands. The whisky is distilled at Thornæs Distillery in Denmark. This cask was filled 2021-06-02, matured in a single 130L ex-Amontillado sherry cask on the Faroe Islands. The cask was emptied 2025-04-04, and the whisky finally bottled 2025-04-23. Limited to 317 50 cl bottles.
Here’s a snippet from the official product page:
“In keeping with our philosophy, this Third Release is brought to its ideal strength using Kirvi Volcanic Mountain Water from the Faroe Islands.
The water is introduced slowly and gently, bringing the whisky to 46 % ABV with patience and precision. This final step allows the spirit to open naturally, revealing its full character without disturbance.”
Nose: Soft and rich with a malty backbone and deep notes of dried fruits. The barley character shines through. With time, pencil shavings and gentle oaky spices add further complexity.
Taste: Medium bodied and wonderfully smooth. A clear sherry influence delivers soft, almost creamy layers of dried fruits.
Finish: Medium long. Drier now, with noticeable astringency from the Spanish oak. White pepper and more dried fruits linger, before a cooling note of mint cream rounds off the finish.
Comment: Highly likeable.
