Here is another of the lab experiments from the deep, dark, and dangerous dungeons at Det Norske Brenneri, Norway. The Kjellermesterens Labprøve 2 - Røkt Norsk Potet is a spirit made from “smoked Norwegian potatoes”. They have used small potatoes of the Troll variety, which they smoked over oak wood chips. The distilled spirit was matured for about 16 months in a 110 litre French oak Limousine cask that previously held single malt whisky.

This release is limited to 31 bottles (50 cl) in total!

I have no idea what we would call this type of spirit, but a friend suggested “Norwegian mezcal” which I thought was quite fitting. It is part funky, part smoky and quite young and vibrant in style.

A few bottles of the Kjellermesterens Labprøve 2 - Røkt Norsk Potet went on sale in Norway yesterday at NOK 1400 (12314002).

Nose: Rich and deep nose. More chocolate earthy than really smoky. A clean nose that slowly reveals a more dirty side.

Taste: Medium body. Chocolate soot. Vanilla sweetness. Soft and sweet smokiness.

Finish: Relatively short finish. Not a whole lot of further development, but that’s OK with me. This is more than enough to keep my interest.

Comment: What a strange little experiment.
