Bivrost Jormungandr
Bivrost Jϱrmungandr, 5 YO, 50%
This is the second release in the Loke Series from Aurora Spirit; the first release in the series was the Bivrost Fenrir (see review). The bulk of this whisky was initially matured for five years in 1st fill French oak ex-wine casks (Premier Cru Bordeaux, so I assume 225L barriques) and then finished for one year in toasted American oak ex-maple syrup casks (or as they call it → Crème Brûlée casks). There is also a small portion of five year old Arctic barley based single malt matured in American oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks. This release is limited to 1919 bottles.
The Bivrost Jϱrmungandr (Bivrost Jormungandr) goes on sale in Norway tomorrow at NOK 1099 (20394402).
Nose: A little shy at first. Sugary sweetness with cinnamon, red berries and ripe orchard fruits. Malt and honey-glazed apples by the fireplace. With time toasted oak appears, alongside the faintest hint of burnt bread crust.
Taste: Full bodied and creamy with a chewy, expansive mouthfeel. Rich fruitiness leads, supported by mild spices and gentle touches of malt and oak.
Finish: Medium long. Continues with rich fruitiness, now gaining structure from cinnamon and nutmeg. Sugary sweetness builds toward notes of Crème Brûlée and nostalgic cinnamon buns, with toasted oak and a flicker of citrus at the end.
Comment: Sweet, creamy and warmly nostalgic.
