Tullibardine 228

Here is the first ever review of an official bottling from Tullibardine Distillery on the Whisky Saga blog. We have previously only reviewed one independent bottling from this distillery.

The Tullibardine 228 is a NAS whisky (no age statement) based on their Tullibardine Sovereign expression. For the 228 they have finished the Sovereign for an additional 12 months in Chateau de Chassagne Montrachet Red Burgundy Casks. These casks are 228 litres in size, hence the name.

The Tullibardine is available to buy in Sweden at SEK 590 (item number 85650).

Nose (19/25): Lots of red wine notes on the nose immediately. White sugar, chocolate, and lots of vanilla to be found here as well. Mild fruits and a bit of an alcohol burn.

Taste (19/25): Again sugary sweetness, and lots of red wine notes.

Finish (18/25): Really heavy red wine finish. Actually it leaves me a mouth feel identical to the one you would have had after swallowing a large gulp of a heavy red wine.

Balance (19/25): Unlike any other whisky I have tried. It did not feel much like a whisky, more like a very strong red wine. Very peculiar. For me this is a cask finish that does not work. There is no trace of distillery character left, the finish dominates completely.

Score (75/100)
