Mossburn Island Cask Bill No 1

Mossburn Island Cask Bill No 1, NAS, 46 %

This is the first product I have tried from Mossburn Distillers & Blenders (MDB). The Mossburn Island Cask Bill No 1 is a blended malt whisky, where all the component malts are from the Islands region.

This product was first matured in refill American bourbon barrels - each component malt by itself. Then it was married and finished in what they call the Mossburn cask. The 200 litre Mossburn cask is custom made with staves from 1st fill ex-bourbon barrels and cask heads made from heavily toasted virgin European oak.

The Mossburn Island Cask Bill No 1 will be launched in Norway on March 6 at NOK 506 (11606801). It is also available in the UK at around GBP 40.

Nose: Very noticeable smoke on the nose. Malt and orchard fruits. Soft oakiness.

Taste: Medium body. Vanilla, white pepper and topical fruits. Ginger and mild caramel. The smokiness is not as noticeable on the palate, but it is definitely present.

Finish: Medium long finish. Lighter now, a lot lighter in fact. More fruity as well → apples and pears. Mild smokiness.

Comment: If you are partial to smoky whisky, but find the medicinal Islay style a bit much, then this is one for you.

Score 85/100
