Ledaig 1995 27 YO (Ferg & Harris)

This truly is an odd one and a very unique whisky for me to try. Most of you will know that Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull mostly produce an unpeated single malt named simply Tobermory. Additionally they produce a peated whisky under the brand Ledaig. Well, this right here is an unpeated Ledaig from Tobermory (see product page), courtesy of independent bottler Ferg & Harris. So, isn’t that simply a Tobermory then, you might ask. Nope, because you see the production of Ledaig does vary slightly from their production of Tobermory. I have no further insight at present as to what these differences are, but I am thinking it most likely has to do with cut points and / or fermentation time. Anywho, how exciting and unusual is this?! Woohoo! Let’s go!

Distilled 1995-09-05. Initially matured in virgin oak hogshead for 27 years, then finished for 3 months in a 1st fill ex-Oloroso sherry cask (cask #147). Bottled 2022-10-08, and limited to 239 bottles.

This Ledaig 1995 27 YO (Ferg & Harris) goes on sale in Norway next week at NOK 6399 (16671701).

Nose: The nose is softly herbal, with the fresh scents of cut grass and eucalyptus leading the way. Ripe red apples add a fruity dimension, while cigar box and fluffy whisps of vanilla and toasted oak contribute to the complexity. As it opens, a deep sweetness emerges, reminiscent of creamy vanilla custard, alongside whispers of citrus, marzipan, and honey.

Taste: Full-bodied and deeply concentrated, it delivers a rich tapestry of flavors. Orchard fruits and mild oakiness start things off, followed by earthy notes of rhubarb and wet leaves. The richness continues with more marzipan and luxurious chocolate, spiced up with white pepper and playful hints of mild chili.

Finish: The finish is very long. The fruitiness shifts towards citrus, adding a fizzy, almost bubbly character. The earthy rhubarb makes a reappearance, accompanied by warming cinnamon, toasted oak, and leather. It's a complex, engaging end to the journey.

Comment: Wow, this is incredible!
