Berry Bros & Rudd Sherry Cask Matured (2023)

Berry Bros & Rudd Sherry Cask Matured (2023), NAS, 45.3 %

This is a recurring product from legendary independent bottler Berry Bros & Rudd (BBR). They have released batches of slightly varying ABV since 2017. This is the 2023 batch, clocking in at 45.3 %. BBR do not disclose the distillery this single malt was produced at, but I have it on good authority that what you find in these bottles is of Glenrothes origin.

This single malt whisky has been exclusively matured in ex-sherry butts.

The Berry Bros & Rudd Sherry Cask (2023) goes on sale in Norway next week, at NOK 838 (16623101).

Nose: A classic sherried Speyside profile. It's rich in dried fruits, yet not overwhelmingly so; it's more tempered and refined. The spiciness is exotic and aromatic, adding an interesting layer without being aggressive. As it opens up, there's just a hint of sulphur, subtle and entirely within the pleasant range.

Taste: On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with a rather dry character. There's an abundance of dark chocolate, enveloping luxurious jam fillings of raspberries and cherries. Notes of marzipan and the expected dried fruits weave through the rich flavors.

Finish: The finish is medium-long and maintains its dryness. While hints of spices linger in the background, the dominant notes are of dark chocolate, marzipan, and jam fillings, reminiscent of a Troika chocolate bar. Towards the end, there's a rough-ish oakiness.

Comment: Chocolate and sherry!
