Glenrothes 1970 50 YO cask #10588 - The Last Drop

Glenrothes 1970 50 YO cask #10588 - The Last Drop, 44.1 %

I recently had the chance to try a couple of super premium bottlings from The Last Drop Distillers Limited. This 50 YO Glenrothes is limited to 87 bottles. Not a whole lot of info on the official product page, but I found this:

“On 6th December 1970, three single casks were filled with Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Over the following half-century, that Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured undisturbed in those self-same barrels. Release Size: 286 bottles (all three casks total):
Cask No. 10586: 45.3%
Cask No. 10588: 44.1%
Cask No. 10589: 45.0%”

The Glenrothes 1970 50 YO cask #10588 is still available to buy online (thank God!) at the robust price of GBP 5400.

Nose: Rather spicy, vibrant and lively on the nose. Rowan berries and eucalyptus straight off. Menthol and malt drops. Nuts and soft oakiness. With time also hints of star anise and orange zest.

Taste: Perfect body (Google Blake Edwards and “10”). The palate closely matches the nose. Rowan berries and cloud berries. Hints of oaky astringency. Mild spiciness. Menthol and eucalyptus. Honey as well.

Finish: Very long finish. More of the same goodness. Now with added notes of juicy figs and plum marmalade. Orange marmalade as well, come to think of it - but not the bitter kind.

Comment: What a marvel of a whisky!

Score 95/100
