Despite the name indicating an age of 25 years, the actual age is a minimum of 28 for this whisky. The Bruichladdich 1990 Over 25 YO 9th Edition PEATY ARTIST S.V was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2019. It has been fully matured in one single refill sherry butt (cask #167), and the total outturn was 483 bottles.

This whisky was distilled just two years before Bruichladdich was mothballed in 1992. Back then Bruichladdich was a peaty whisky. Today, of course, the re-opened distillery produces the unpeated Bruichladdich brand, as well as the heavily peated Port Charlotte and the über-peated Octomore.

You can buy the Bruichladdich 1990 Over 25 YO 9th Edition PEATY ARTIST S.V in Norway starting August 27 at NOK 5125. It is also available to buy in the UK at around GBP 395 and directly from LMdW at € 475.

Nose: I am met by a soft peatiness that is in no way overwhelming. Smoky banana split with vanilla ice cream. Warm spices, mixed herbs and chocolate.

Taste: Rich and full bodied with a medium sweetness. Dark and complex on the palate, more so than expected. Dark chocolate, earthy cinnamon and hints of licorice. Creamy vanilla, as well as ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Finish: Long finish. More nutty in character now - almonds in particular. Drying with mild leather, ginger and spicy honey.

Comment: A highly enjoyable “old school” Bruichladdich.
