BenRiach The Sixteen

BenRiach The Sixteen, 16 YO, 43%

This core range product from BenRiach Distillery has been matured in three different cask types; ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry casks, and virgin oak.

The label also states “smoke level: trace”; which is something I am told that Rachel Barrie reintroduced into the core range of BenRiach when she took the position of Master Blender, as a nod to the BenRiach expressions of yesteryear.

I did review a previous incarnation of the BenRiach 16 YO back in 2013. It seems both BenRiach and I have matured since then.

The BenRiach The Sixteen is available in Norway at NOK 990 (4995701).

Nose: Rich and creamy with malt and orchard fruits at the core. A faint wisp of smoke blends with toasted oak and earthy cinnamon. Opens further with nuttiness, vanilla and juicy pear.

Taste: Medium bodied. Balanced between dry and sweet. White pepper and toasted oak lead, with a pinch of soot. Ripe red apples reinforce the fruity profile.

Finish: Medium long. Earthy cinnamon joins vanilla sticks and classic malt drops.

Comment: Balanced fruit with gentle spice.
