The Fat Trout

Time for a Scotch blend today. The Fat Trout is a blended whisky produced by Ian Macleod. This 3 YO blend is fairly popular in Norway - ranked number 12 among Scotch blends in 2017, with sales in excess of 13 000 litres. Outside of Norway I have only found this product for sale in New Zealand and the USA.

The malt component of The Fat Trout is mainly made up by Speyside malts. All in all around 30 different single malts are used. Both Islay and the Highlands are represented in the mix as well.

The tagline for The Fat Trout is "The sportman's choice".

You can buy a 50 cl bottle of The Fat Trout in Norway at the very decent price of NOK 244 (4388602). This product is not available in Sweden. In fact the Swedish monopoly store (Systembolaget) suggest "fat torrt" (dry plate) when I searched for Fat Trout. I found that a bit funny..

Nose: Pleasant enough, if not very exciting. There's no trout jumping happily out of the glass though, which is good. Not sure I would have enjoyed a fishy whisky. What I do detect is malt and soft oakiness mixed with light floral and fruity notes. There is possibly some peat here as well. Strawberries and vanilla with time.

Taste: Medium body. Vanilla, bitter oranges, and spices I cannot pin down long enough to name them. The hints of smoke from the nose follow through to the palate - maybe more akin to ashes now.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Dark mocca and a touch of orange juice. Fades away relatively quickly.

Comments: A straightforward, easy drinking blend that is a shade darker than your average blend. Might work well outdoors. Now if only I knew what that was like.. Huh, the great outdoors. What a novel concept..
