Springbank 21 YO Open Day 2014The Springbank Open Day is an annual happening in Campbeltown. Lots of masterclasses, distillery tours, barbecue, fairly prices drams and live music. Unfortunately I was not able to attend the festivities on May 22 this year. Maybe next year.

Springbank released two special bottlings on the Open Day 2014. One was the Springbank 21 YO Open Day 2014, and the other was the Longrow 1998 15 YO Open Day 2014. I was fortunate enough to get to try them both, as well as a few other nice bottlings from Springbank and Cadenhead, just a few days ago.

The Springbank 21 YO Open Day 2014 is matured in a rum cask. This is a single cask release, with only 174 bottles available.

Nose (23/25): Very rich and full of flavor. Quite sweet, and I can definitely pick up some sweet and dark rum notes on the nose here. More prominent aromas are apples, raisins and chocolate. A really lovely nose!

Taste (23/25): Oh, we are in for a real treat here. A lovely nose followed by a lovely taste! Just as rich and full bodied as the nose advertised. Velvety mouth feel, super smooth. Apples, pears, raisins, dark chocolate.

Finish (22/25): Becomes more oily on the finish. Dark caramel, fudge, dark chocolate - the dark side; balanced with a lighter side with fruits.

Balance (23/25): Wow! I believe this is the best Springbank I have ever tried; maybe with the exception of the 1969 vintage 39 YO from Chieftain's Choice...

Score (91/100)
