Time for an exclusive bottling from Swedish distillery Smögen today. The Smögen Buteljörer & Mässketörer #1 was never made commercially available. The name translates to “bottlers & festival helpers”.

This whisky was distilled November 2011, matured in a 2nd fill 55 litre Sauternes octave cask (cask #53/2011), and bottled in November 2016. The total outturn was a mere 92 bottles. It was only made available to “those that help in shaping our dream” as it says on the label.

Nose: Relatively mild for a Smögen. Malty, nutty and robust. There’s assorted fruits in the background. The peatiness is very soft and fruity - not at all the usual punch. Vanilla and marshmallows with a touch of grape juice.

Taste: Full of body and soul! The peatiness is more apparent here, but it is just a brief flash accompanied by hot spices. Then a sweet fruitiness takes over.

Finish: Medium long finish. It remains sweet and fruity. The peat transmogrifies into dark chocolate towards the end. Sugary notes. Hints of ginger and nuts.

Comment: A delicate and soft Smögen. Not at all the usual fare, but still very good!

Score 87/100
