Mackmyra Midvinter (Midwinter)Finally I have the time to review the third of the whiskies in the new Seasons Series from Mackmyra. As far as I know this was the first release in this new series which also includes Midnattssol and Iskristall.

Mackmyra Midvinter has received a finish from French Bordeaux casks, glühwine casks (mulled wine) and sherry casks. A rather unique combination, and I am very curious about the glühwine influence here. It should be spicy, but could also be a bit too different from what you expect from a whisky.

This whisky is available to buy in Sweden at SEK 598 (item number 85206).

Nose (21/25): Vanilla, Christmas spices, gingerbread, dark fruits. After a while in the glass it takes on a very pleasant, soft sweetness. I image it is the wine casks that contribute to this.

Taste (19/25): Pepper, ginger and cinnamon. Quite spicy. There is a clear wine influence here as well - soft and sweet.

Finish (19/25): Pepper and mild caramel. The spices are certainly present all the way - and added to the mix I now find herbs. It is cool and dry on the finish.

Balance (19/25): A strange one this - not quite my cup of whisky, but it certainly is interesting. There is a boldness to Mackmyra that I like. They do push the boundaries - sometimes a bit too much maybe?

Score (78/100)
