Nordic Whisky #20 - Braunstein 14:1

Braunstein 14:1, 9 YO, 46 %

The Braunstein 14:1 was distilled in 2005, bottled on 2014-03-18. The whisky has spent 7 years and 8 months in an Oloroso sherry cask, before receiving a little over a year to finish in a cognac cask. This is an unpeated whisky, as all the '1' releases in the Braunstein Library Collection are, whereas the '2' releases are peated.

You can still buy Braunstein 14:1 directly from the distillery's own online shop at DKK 795.

Nose (23/25): Full, complex and rich. Leather, tobacco, chocolate, caramel, vanilla and baked apples. I do pick up cognac notes here; sweet and slightly spiced caramel notes.

Taste (20/25): The sherry does shine through more on the palate than it did on the nose. It is a bit dry. Lots of apples, and something that brings sushi to mind. Not at all sure what that could be, it certainly isn't anything fishy as such.

Finish (21/25): Quite heavy and rich. Apples, oranges and caramel. The finish is medium long, and quite pleasant.

Balance (21/25): A fine dram, if a bit different from previous releases I have tried from this distillery. The nose is really good.

Score (85/100)
