Jameson Caskmates - Stout Edition

Jameson Caskmates - Stout Edition

Irish whiskey giants Jameson released this new expression last year. They sent a few casks to the local craft beer brewery Franciscan Well and they used it to age their stout. The casks were returned to Midleton and then used to give a beer finish to Jameson. Maybe the use of beer casks is a new trend? I have tried two very nice beer cask mature whiskies previously; the Mackmyra Ægirs Bior and the Teerenpeli Distiller’s Choice AURA.

The Jameson Caskmates - Stout Edition will be released for sale in Norway on Friday May 6 and will sell at NOK 399 (3913901).It is already available to buy in Sweden at SEK 349 (8793701). In the UK you can pick up a bottle at under GBP 25.

Nose (22/25): Sweet and dessert like. The beer cask finish adds sweetness, and soft notes of coffee, dark chocolate and whiffs of smoke. A bit spicy and with some oakiness.

Taste (22/25): Definitely a bit sweeter than the regular Jameson. I pick up quite strong chocolate and coffee notes as well, just like on the nose. Ripe summer fruits, some bitter-ish oakiness.

Finish (21/25): Medium long finish. It feels a bit thin now, and I wish it had a bit more body. Dark chocolate all the way. Sweet.

Balance (21/25): I quite enjoyed this dram. It is rather different from the regular Jameson, so this beer cask finish certainly changed the character of the whiskey.

Score (86/100)
