High West Double Rye

High West Double Rye, NAS, 46%

The final High West product under review for a while, the High West Double Rye. The mash bill is a blend of rye from MDG and from High West Distillery:

  • MGP: 95% rye, 5% malted barley

  • HWD: 80% rye, 20% malted rye

The High West Double Rye is available in Norway at NOK 759 (19560401), and in the US around USD 38.

Nose: A distinctly green and herbal profile, with vibrant notes of cut grass, cloves, earthy cinnamon, and a touch of mint. Underneath the spice, soft layers of caramel pastry emerge, followed by warm honey over rye bread. Tropical fruits linger subtly in the background.

Taste: Full bodied. A punch of white pepper and cooling peppermint lead the way, followed by cinnamon and a mild tannic dryness. Hints of soft perfume add elegance to the spiced richness.

Finish: Medium long finish. The profile turns drier, with dark chocolate and a return of the peppery warmth. Lingering notes of licorice and fresh mint round it off.

Comment: Rich and contemplative.
