High West Bourbon

High West Bourbon, 2 YO, 46%

This is a blend of straight bourbons, some produced at High West and some at other distilleries. The mash bill is given as follows (see product page):

  • Component 1: 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt from MGP;

  • Component 2: 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley;

  • Component 3+: undisclosed due to contractual reasons.

Given the above I find it a bit strange that High West notes the following on the back label “Never chill-filtered or carbon-treated and utilizing a variety of high rye content mash bills to convey an earthy complexity (with a bit of spice).” The above do not come across as high rye mash bills to me.

The High West Bourbon is available in Norway at NOK 749 (19515901).

Nose: Soft, mellow and appealing. Marshmallows, vanilla milkshake, runny caramel, unsalted peanuts, popcorn and toasted oak. It smells like what I used to think of as the U.S.A. Those were the days, and may they return asap!

Taste: Medium body. Super smooth and rich. White pepper, milkshake and tropical fruits. Corn bread and honey.

Finish: Medium long finish. More of the same really. It remains sweet and rich throughout, and that is very satisfatory.

Comment: Yum, yum, yum!
