High Coast Altitud

High Coast Altitud, ~5-6 YO, 46 %

Just in time for us starting to fly around between whisky destinations, we get the High Coast Altitud.

This whisky will be made available to all passengers travelling with SAS domestically and internationally shortly. This Autumn it will start making its appearance in 50 ml PET bottles.

The High Coast Altitud is a medium peated at 11 ppm in the malt. The recipe is as follows:

  • 51 % matured in Hungarian oak then transferred to ex-bourbon casks

  • 23 % matured in 2nd fill ex-bourbon casks

  • 19 % matured in Swedish oak and then transferred to ex-bourbon casks

  • 5 % matured in Hungarian oak

  • 2 % matured in ex-PX casks

Nose: Cool and perfectly relaxed, like an early Autumn day on the banks of the Ångermanälven at the distillery. There is a whiff of smoke here, but it comes across more like peppery notes, toasted oak and dark chocolate. With time more spices - exotic and mixed. Also a hint of ripe apples and red berries. It is rather complex on the nose and does keep developing.

Taste: Medium body, and just as cool and relaxed as the nose suggested. More chocolate. Creamy texture. White pepper and a touch of aniseed.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Not a whole lot of development, but it has a soft and pleasant creamy chocolate landing with a mild peppery after burn.

Comment: Charming nose, but could have flown a little longer..

Score 84/100
