GlenAllachie 2008 12 YO Single Cask PX Hogshead, 12 YO, 54.5 %

This GlenAllachie was bottled exclusively for Norsk whiskyforbund and the whisky club Malt Whisky Norefjell. Distilled 2008-10-28, matured in a PX hogshead (cask #846) and bottled February 2021. The total outturn was 331 bottles.

This is the 7th bottling for the Federation of Norwegian Whisky Societies (Norsk whiskyforbund).

The GlenAllachie 2008 12 YO Single Cask PX Hogshead was available to the club members at around NOK 1300.

Nose: Peppery dried fruits. Certainly a PX cask - tons of dried fruits here. There is a very noticeable sting from the alcohol here. White pepper. Earthy notes of cinnamon, vanilla, wet leaves and almonds. With time also tobacco leaves and leather.

Taste: Smooth and full bodied. Sugary sweet notes of dried fruits. Black and white pepper. Dark and dry chocolate. Surprisingly light on the palate. I was expecting a much heavier sweetness and darker fruits based on the impression of the nose and from the color of this dram (it is very dark).

Finish: Medium long finish. More notes of dark and dry chocolate. Red berries. Dried fruits - a bit darker now actually. Towards the end a very welcome wave of sugary fruitiness. Then it dries up again.

Comment: A bit too rough around the edges to get a top score, though it is quality stuff. Should it perhaps have been brought down to the GlenAllachie de facto “standard” of 48 %? I think perhaps yes, and I’m not a fan of adding water to whisky!
