Time now for a young rye whiskey. This is my first review of whiskey from Virginia based distillery Catoctin Creek. Founded in 2009 they are a fairly new company.

Here is the official blurb for their Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye 80 Proof:

“This pre-Prohibition style rye whisky is made from 100% rye grain, sourced locally when available.  It is mashed, fermented, distilled and aged completely in our distillery, before bottling it at a very sippable 80 proof.  Aged in new charred white oak casks for a period of around two years”

Nose: Rich and very sweet nose. Lots of marshmallows, cream vanilla, and sweet toasted oak. Mild peppery notes with time.

Taste: Medium to light body. Lots of caramel and toasted oak - but it is not oaky per se. Peppery marshmallows.

Finish: Short to medium long finish. Even more peppery now. Lots of burnt caramel and creamy vanilla. On subsequent sips a moderately green and perfume-y finish emerges.

Comment: A very sweet rye, with lots of charm.

Score 85/100
