Balblair 1983 - First Release

Time now for a Balblair 1983 - First release. This whisky has been matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for about 30 years. It was bottled in 2013 and released just before the end of last year. Balblair is a Highland distillery, that has been in operation since 1790. This makes them one of the very oldest distilleries in Scotland.

Balblair has a rather extensive range of vintage whiskies on sale at any one time. There is certainly a lot to explore here.

You can purchase the Balblair Vintage 1983 in Norway at NOK 1980 (item number 884501). As far as I can see this whisky is not currently available to buy in Sweden. For some reason the Systembolaget in Sweden lists all the Balblairs on offer simply as Balblair Vintage, which is a bit bit annoying.

Nose (23/25): Fresh, with a lot of berries and vanilla. This is certainly a bourbon matured whisky. Very nice oak notes coming through; toffee, ice cream, caramel and a whiff of bananas. Quite light on the nose to start, but give it time and it will open up and it becomes more rich.

Taste (22/25): A bit darker sweetness on the palate. Deep vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate notes. Mixed with this you also have lighter notes of fruit and runny honey. A bit floral maybe.

Finish (22/25): Still sweet and dark, more peppery and spicy now, and the caramel is more like fudge. Warm and long finish.

Balance (22/25): A lovely, complex dram that needs time. So give it time, just do it!

Score (89/100)
