Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel 2013, NAS, 48 %

Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel 2013This is the second whisky I try from the Yamazaki Wood Collection. This is a series of four different expressions showing off the different influences of different types of casks. The four variants are bourbon, sherry, puncheon and mizunara. I have previously reviewed the Yamazaki Puncheon 2013.

This whisky is not available for sale in Norway, but in Sweden you can still purchase it at SEK 997 (item number 40403).

Nose (23/25): Clean, smart, well-dressed and well-behaved. This is a gentleman of a whisky. The dominating aromas are definitely from the bourbon barrels used for maturation. Vanilla, mild chocolate and caramel, as well as a hint of licorice.

Taste (22/25): The bourbon influence is in full effect on the taste also. Vanilla, marshmallows, and caramel. I do find some spices here, adding a bit more action; pepper and a few hints of ginger and cinnamon.

Finish (20/25): Becomes a bit more oaky and nutty on the finish. More caramel. Relatively dry and of medium length.

Balance (22/25): A clear and positive bourbon profile on this whisky - it is quite refined. It delivers what it advertises, and does so with a certain amount of flair. This is a bottle I have made room for in my shelf at home.

Score (87/100)
