James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey

James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey, NAS, 50 %

This is a Kentucky bourbon. There is now, since 2017, a James E. Pepper distillery, but the sample I tasted for this review was bottled before then, hence the spirit was sourced from somewhere (tm).

The mashbill is stated to have “over 38 % rye”, and as it is a bourbon it must also contain at least 51 % corn.

You can check out the official product page here.

The James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey is available online at around € 35-40.

Nose: Perfumed, cracked black pepper corns. Basil and rosemary. With time honey, toasted oak and vanilla.

Taste: Full bodied. Creamy, burnt caramel and pepper lead the way. Ripe apples and strawberries then follow.

Finish: Medium long finish. The pepper notes come in waves interspersed by little taste bombs of herbs and sweets.

Comment: A charmer!
