My first review of single malt whisky from the Einar’s Distillery on the Faroe Islands. This young distillery started producing whisky in 2016.

The Einar’s Merlin has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

Buy online at DKK 1295 for a 50 cl bottle.

Nose: On the initial encounter, Einar's Merlin, presents a youthful, malty, and somewhat unrefined aroma. The presence of alcohol is noticeable, accompanied by fruity notes and a gentle, underlying funk. As time passes, hints of vanilla emerge, alongside growing impressions of damp leaves, cedarwood, and earthy cinnamon. The scent evokes a distinct autumnal atmosphere.

Taste: Boasting a full body with a touch of rawness, this whisky introduces a dash of spiciness – white pepper, nutmeg, and ginger. The palate also detects mild oaky nuances.

Finish: The finish is relatively brief, leaving behind traces of white sugar and additional white pepper. The experience is reminiscent of canned pears drenched in a simple syrup.

Comment: It feels quite young, but there is a promise of better things to come.

Score 79/100
