Bunnahabhain 1988 30 YO Antique Pomander

Bunnahabhain 1988 30 YO Antique Pomander (Wemyss Malts), 46 %

Matured in a single hogshead (unspecified), resulting in a total of 190 bottles, released 2018.

Nose: What strikes me first is that this is floral, maritime and a little spicy. Not quite what I expected from an old Bunnahabhain. But let’s look, and sniff, more closely. It comes across as almost perfumed, but not quite (thankfully). There’s a noticeable age here, manifested through notes of menthol, eucalyptus and even chamomile. Also sandalwood and old, wooden attic.

Taste: Full bodied. Rather green up front; cut grass, and tomato plant. Somewhat waxy. Mild spiciness. Hints of salt.

Finish: Long finish. Calm, cool and a little aloof. More of the same, but it holds your interest. Alternating waves of soft and sweet fruitiness (fresh fruit and dried fruit), and then green notes.

Comment: I’m a little thrown by this; not a very typical Bunnahabhain in my book, but a highly positive experience all the same.

Score 88/100

Thanks Stephen!
