Today grain whisky is on the menu. It has been a while since I last reviewed a grain whisky. This Girvan 1965 47 YO The Clan Denny was released by independent bottler Douglas Laing just over three years ago. It was matured in a cask with no further details know than the cask number (cask #9487).

When released the Girvan 1965 47 YO The Clan Denny sold at around GBP 140.

Nose: A rather closed and shy whisky. Even after leaving it in the glass for a good half hour there is not a whole lot happening here. It is not bad in any way, just sort of ... well, evasive. Red berries and grapes. Vanilla and mint ice-cream. A slightly spicy and perfumy character builds after a while - it sort of reminds me of a rye whiskey...

Taste: Rich and full mouthfeel. Quite spicy. Pepper, mint and peppermint. Ginger and vanilla.

Finish: Long and rather oaky finish. The polish and perfume does relent after a while, and we are left with a soft and sugary landing. Delicate sweetness and hints of mint and After Eight in the end.

Comments: A nice enough dessert-like grain. I would have expected a bit more complexity, and the nose was overly closed. Still, a fine dram.
