Here’s an odd bird. A peated single malt from Thomson Whisky Distillery on New Zealand. The distillery is located in Riverhead, north west of Auckland, and it was founded in 2014.

Here is the product description:

Made from 100% New Zealand grown malted barley, smoked using Manuka wood, and distilled through a hand beaten copper pot still, it’s our Manuka Smoke release in its youth. This ‘work in progress’ bottling offers natural smoke, cinnamon, clove, and Manuka oils.

You can buy the Thomson Manuka Wood Smoke Single Malt in Norway starting this Friday at NOK 830 (1079301).

Nose: Very unusual smoke, likely due to the unusual type of wood used. Rowan berries and vanilla. With time it settles and the sweetness is strangely comforting and downright lovable.

Taste: Medium body. Soft and mild in character. The wood smoke character is still here, but I would not really call it all that smoky. Mild fruits in the back.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Wood smoke, cinnamon and vanilla. A bit of bubble gum towards the end.

Comment: A fun experience.
