Timorous Beastie

Independent bottler Douglas Laing's “Remarkable Regional Malts” is an umbrella brand for their collection of premium, blended (vatted) malt whiskies. In 2009 they launched the first product, Big Peat, their Islay offering. Since then they have also launched a Speyside product (Scallywag), an Island whisky (Rock Oyster) and the Timorous Beastie representing the Highlands.

Douglas Laing will of course not reveal the complete make-up of the Timorous Beastie, but they do confirm that it contains whisky from Glen Garioch, Dalmore and Glengoyne distilleries.

You can buy Timorous Beastie in Norway at NOK 655 (2226601), in Sweden at SEK 489 (8414001), and in the UK at GBP 30.

Nose (22/25): Clean and crisp, but at the same time a bit earthy. Spices, malt, summer fruits, grapes, honey and hints of camphor.

Taste (21/25): A bit more sherry influence on the palate. Dried fruits, ginger, camphor, and spices. A bit sugary. Full and rich.

Finish (21/25): Malt drops, caramel, and cinnamon. Rich and medium long.

Balance (21/25): Timorous means to show lack of confidence. There is no reason for this mouse to be timorous, and I guess that is where the beastie side comes in. This is a big dram.

Score (85/100)
