So this is the third sample from the SMWS Sample Box No. 1, and it was tasted blind.

After the tasting I got this description from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society:

A combination of lots of ‘new’ and ‘old’ aromas; a very old dusty leather bound library book in a new shiny cover and the lively spiciness of paprika powder. With water hazelnut oil, figs and dried cherries and in the taste a Peshwari naan bread with mango chutney.

The SMWS 72.31 Something Old, Something New was distilled on 1983-12-15, matured in a refill hogshead, then bottled in 2013, with a total outturn of 206 bottles. You might still be able to pick up a bottle online at auction, and the prize appears to be around € 200.

Nose (22/25): Sweet vanilla and summer fruits. The fruits are delicate and sweet; there's citrus (oranges and mandarins), and fresh apples. The fruits are sprinkled with a light syrup. I am also picking up some floral elements, or maybe it is old hay? After a few minutes I am transported to a old attic filled with centuries old piles of dry papers.

Taste (21/25): The same light and sweet fruitiness here as on the nose. I would maybe have wished for the fruit to be a bit more standout-ish, it is all a bit bland, at least at first. On subsequent sips it turns a bit more spicy and oaky.

Finish (21/25): The dram is showing more character now. It feels richer and fatter. Oils and honey. Long finish, that does get a a tad too oaky towards the end.

Balance (21/25): A fin old dram, that did show some signs of being a little tired. Maybe it should have been bottled a year or two earlier?
