Royal Brackla 1979 18 YO, 43 %

Royal Brackla 1979 18 YOHurrah! This is a first, and a fun one at that. This is the first time I have reviewed a whisky from Royal Brackla here on the blog, and while this is a quite old bottling, it is still very much available.

Here's a brief intro to the distillery Royal Brackla, or just Brackla, from the superb site Malt Madness:

Royal Brackla was founded in 1812 by Captain Willian Fraser of Brackla. After operating under the name 'Brackla' for more than twenty years the distillery earned the right to carry the 'Royal' prefix in 1835 when they became suppliers to the court of King William IV. (source)

Weirdly enough you can buy this whisky in Sweden at Systembolaget as SEK 1297 (8538301). I suspect this must be a small allotment of bottles found in a dusty warehouse somewhere.

Nose: Ooh, I like the welcome I'm getting here. Candied apples, cinnamon and licorice. Malty and lovely!

Taste: The mouthfeel is a bit thin. I find it relatively oaky, with caramel and light fruitiness.

Finish: Medium long finish. The candied apples are back (hurrah!). The finish also offers caramel with a somewhat burnt note to it.

Comments: A solid dram with a wonderful nose, that I believe suffers a little under the low ABV.

Score (85/100)
