Miyagikyo and Yoichi Rum Cask Finish 2017

Miyagikyo and Yoichi Rum Cask Finish 2017

These two whiskies from Japanese whisky giant Nikka are sold as a set. Both of these whiskies have enjoyed a finishing period in rum casks for up to 12 months before they were bottled in 2017. The pair was sold at around GBP 340 but it is now sadly sold out. Only a few sets arrived in Norway and they were distributed to the main whisky bars before us common folks had a chance to get our hands on them :-)

Miyagikyo Rum Cask Finish 2017, NAS, 46 %

Nose: Rich and complex. Grapes and mild vanilla. Mild undertones of sugar and rum. Very distinct vanilla with time. Also fruitier as time passes.

Taste: Buttery and full-bodied. White pepper and ginger. Slightly fizzy with a touch of oak. Some baked and grilled oranges with time. Vanilla.

Finish: Medium to long finish. Ginger flavoured caramel sauce. Deep and comforting.

Comments: A delicate dram.

Yoichi Rum Cask Finish 2017, NAS, 46 %

Nose: Rich and complex. Dark chocolate and chocolate ashes. Drier and dirtier than the Miyagikyo. It has a light earthiness to it.

Taste: Rich and full-bodied, but less creamy than the other one. Black pepper, mild oak and fizzy champagne. More buttery with time, and with added ashes.

Finish: Long finish. Dirty caramel and pepper notes. Deep and warm all the way. Reaclly creamy now.

Comments: Loove the deep peppery ashes!
