Linkwood 1978 37 YO (Special Release 2016), 50,3 %

Linkwood 1978 37 YO (Special Release 2016)Another expensive special release is under review today. I apologize to the readers that feel there's too few affordable and available whiskies reviewed lately, but I promise to make up for that shortly. But today, the focus is on the Linkwood 1978 37 YO (Special Release 2016). Linwood has not been included in the Special releases line-up for a few years.

The Linkwood 1978 37 YO (Special Release 2016) was matured in refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts. The outturn was 6114 bottles.

The Linkwood 1978 37 YO (Special Release 2016) is still available to buy in Norway at NOK 5000 (6391401), and in the UK at around GBP 600.

Nose: Candy store! The kind of candy store you dreamed of when you were a little kid. Lots of bright colours, and the air filled with all manner of sweet and fruity aromas. Row upon row of glorious sugary creations in all the colours of the rainbow. A touch artificial here and there, but who cares, we are in candy heaven! Slightly dusty as well, bringing to mind the attic of an old wooden house. Stacks of old books line the walls.

Taste: Wow! This dram packs a punch of massive flavours! Is that really 37 YO? Wheee! Here we go then! White pepper, hint of sweet chilli, licorice, vanilla, mixed fruits, red berries, camphor and malt drops.

Finish: Long finish. A touch more green now, almost herbal in style but not quite. Milk chocolate and cream. The sweetness is toned down over time, and it does take on a more oaky and dusty character. Not by far too oaky, but the euphoria does come to an end. That's probably a good thing...right?

Comments: I love it!
