Eiktyrne Småfat Cognacfat nr. 1045

It is still quite rare to see new releases of Norwegian single malt whisky. A few weeks back we finally saw a new, and very limited, release from Det Norske Brenneri. I recently visited this distillery, and you can read more about that here.

The Eiktyrne Småfat Cognacfat nr. 1045 was released in a very limited number of 69 bottles (50 cl). The spirit was distilled on 2012-07-04 and laid down on an ex-sherry cask. On 2015-11-19 the whisky was transferred to a 40 litre ex-cognac cask (cask #1045), and on 2016-03-02 the whisky was bottled.

The Eiktyrne Småfat Cognacfat nr. 1045 is now sold out. It was sold at NOK 995.

Nose: Christmas cake, dried fruits, homemade caramel pudding with real™ caramel sauce. This might all seem a bit dark and heavy, but it really is not. You see it is balanced with a layer of lighter notes, including vanilla, rowan berry and raw nuts.

Taste: Smooth-ish mouthfeel, it does have a little roughness to it, but still wel on the side of pleasant. Very nutty and relatively sweet. I find the same homemade caramel pudding with sauce here, as well as the dried fruits. baked apples covered in rich honey.

Finish: Medium long finish. The sweetness grows heavier and thicker now. More honey, mixed with dark chocolate rather than caramel. Still very nutty - unsalted peanuts primarily, but also chopped almonds.

Comments: By far the best Norwegian single malt whisky released to date. I certainly do like the direction this is taking.
