Box Whisky Dálvve, 5 YO, 46 %
The first ever core range product from Box Whisky in Sweden was released recently. This is a momentous occasion for any distillery, and marks a coming of age for the company. The Box Whisky Dálvve is also the first product they release in a 70 cl bottle. The name Dálvve is sami for “winter”.
This whisky is 5 years old, has been matured in 1st fill bourbon casks, and is lightly to medium peated at 11 ppm. The first batch, which I have tried here, was 14 000 bottles large. Batch 2 already out.
You can get all the very detailed facts about this release here.
Nose: Mild and a bit closed up. There’s a light oakiness here. Vanilla, hints of cereal, Mentholatum, apple juice, ripe pears and coconut oil. The peat is not very noticeable, but it is there – playing in the background. I also pick up some honey and chocolate here.
Taste: Medium body and smooth mouthfeel. Oaky spices is what strikes me at first. Slightly green – minty. White pepper, sea-salt and a backdrop of wood smoke.
Finish: Medium to short finish. Caramel, wet oak planks, toasted oak, and a light fruitiness. Powdered sugar and vanilla. Towards the end I pick up a somewhat bitter note, and it also turns a bit watery.
Comments: A very decent entry level, core range, whisky. Congrats, Box Whisky!
