Westward American Single Malt Stout Cask

Westward American Single Malt Stout Cask, NAS, 46 %

Westward is an Oregon based distillery making American single malt whiskey. This product, the Westward American Single Malt Stout Cask, has been finished in stout casks. The stout casks in questions are casks that Westward lend out to local breweries, who use them to cask matured their stout beers, then the casks are returned to Westward. The Westward whiskey is then finished for a year in these “stout casks”.

Westward was established back in 2004, and one of the founders was Christian Krogstad. That’s a very Norwegian name, and indeed his grandparents were immigrants hailing from Norway.

I have in fact reviewed one Westward whiskey previously, and that was back in 2013! Here is the review (in Norwegian - but Google Translate is your friend).

The Westward American Whiskey Single Malt Stout Cask goes on sale in Norway February 14 at NOK 949 (14047301). You can also buy this whiskey straight from the distillery at USD 90, which makes the sales price here in Norway quite competitive.

Nose: This is a fat and almost meaty whiskey. It is big. Rather green - tomato plant, green herbs, and mustard seeds.

Taste: Medium body. Straight off the taste comes off as a bit bland. It is very green, with hints of cucumber. White pepper, coffee, chocolate and vanilla.

Finish: Medium long finish. Pepper, chocolate, cut grass and vanilla. In the end another hint of cucumber and pepper.

Comment: Stranger in a strange land!
