Macallan 1997 16 YO Old Particular

The independent bottler Douglas Laing has many interesting ranges of whiskies. One of them is Old Particular which was launched in 2013. This is what Douglas Laing says about this range:

Our Old Particular Single Cask selection is a ‘particularly’ sought after range of individually-selected Malts from all over Scotland – each bottled according to the founders’ philosophy of topmost quality. Meaning, Old Particular bottlings are from only one cask, without colouring and without chill filtration – allowing the cask and the naturally present oils, fats and enzymes in the spirit to make their own special contribution to its nose, mouthfeel, palate and finish.

Macallan 16 YO was distilled in October 1997 and bottled in March 2014. The outturn from the refill hogshead cask ref. DL10235 was 360 bottles.

The whisky is available in Norway (item number 1733701) at NOK 1300 and in Sweden (item number 85778) at SEK 1269.

Nose (23/25): Wow, what an amazing nose! Licorice, camphor, medicine, cough medicine, mint, herbs, a whiff of smoke, dust and orange zest. Will it taste as good as it smells?

Taste (22/25): The taste delivers what the nose promised! Still a lot of licorice, camphor, herbs, spices and ammonia. The mouthfeel was warm, a bit dry and really full.

Finish (21/25): A funny finish actually! At first it was warm with the taste of licorice. Then it felt cool with the taste of camphor. In the end there I thought it tasted like the aftertaste of fruit caramel. Do you know what I mean? Just a little bit metallic, and a tiny hint of perfume.

Balance (22/25): This was really a complex whisky. Wave after wave with new impressions from start to finish.

Score (88/100)
