Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Madeira Cask Finish

Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Madeira Cask Finish, 40 %

This is the first release in the Age of Discovery series from Glenfiddich.

Here are the official blurbs. First on the series itself:

Honouring Explorers

15th Century Portuguese explorers inspired our Age Of Discovery whiskies. They defined sea routes from Europe to Thailand and Malaysia in search of a passage to India. Along the way discovering new islands – Porto Santo and Madeira. Their cultures, customs and fine tastes.

Then on this particular release:

In homage to the intrepid Portuguese voyagers who went on to change our understanding of the new world, we created Glenfiddich’s first ever 19 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky.

Finished in fine, aged Madeira wine casks from an independent island winery dating back to 1850 we named this expression, Glenfiddich Age of Discovery.

You can pick up a bottle of the Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Madeira Cask Finish online at around GBP 87 (down from a previous GBP 105).

Nose: Baked apples and pears. Dried fruits and hints of cinnamon. Fine chocolate and dried oranges (you know, the snack kind). A bit shy on the nose. With time it opens a bit and I get more orchard fruits. Hints of leather.

Taste: Full bodied and creamy mouthfeel. Soft spices and rich sherry notes. Black pepper, mild chili, unsalted peanuts.

Finish: Medium to long finish. Tingling sensation of warm pepper all the way. Add to that the softest notes of caramel, vanilla and apples. Hints of ice coffee.

Comments: A wonderful discovery (pun intended!). Surprisingly rich at 40 % ABV.

Score (88/100)
