Fary Lochan Distillery Edition Batch #3

Fary Lochan Distillery Edition Batch #3, 7 YO, 47.3 %

This is another distillery exclusive bottling from Danish distillery Fary Lochan. The Fary Lochan Distillery Edition Batch #3 was limited to 1000 mini bottles (20 cl) and 250 bottles size 50 cl.

This whisky was initially matured in two 2nd fill ex-bourbon quarter casks, then finished in a single ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry hogshead. It was distilled 2014-04-16. and bottled 2021-06-23. The distillery describes it as very lightly nettle smoked. Yep, that’s a unique feature of Fary Lochan. They do not use peat they use nettle smoke.

More details on this release on the official website.

Nose: Fruity and malty at first. Ripe apple and banana. Hint of rowan berries. Light, soft and sweet smokiness with time - reminiscent of smoky chipotle chili and smoked paprika. With further time the smoky chili chocolate is even more evident.

Taste: Medium body. Bitter-ish and green. Chocolate, green chili, Schezuan pepper. Apples and floral honey.

Finish: Medium long finish. Dried fruits now enter the scene; dates, figs, and raisins. Not very sweet though - it is quite well-behaved. Toasted almonds. Again a very soft smokiness.

Comment: Smoky chili - yum!

Score 86/100
