Amrut Spectrum 004

Amrut Spectrum 004, NAS, 50 %

Back in 2016 I reviewed the predecessor for this product, the Amrut Spectrum (see review). Here now is the Amrut Spectrum 004, first released in 2017.

This whisky is initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels, then in custom built casks with a “spectrum” of staves from different oak cask types:

“To make the Spectrum 004 a two part maturation technique has been employed the first being maturation of New Make spirit in ex Bourbon casks followed by transferring the aged spirit into the custom barrels. The custom barrels are made with 4 different kinds of staves new American Oak with Char level 3 new French Oak with light toasting ex Oloroso staves and ex PX Sherry staves. The aforementioned barrel has equal proportions of all four kinds of staves arranged in a one after the other manner lending their own characteristics and complexities to the malt coming into its own on the nose and the palate.”

The Amrut Spectrum 004 goes on sale in Norway early March at NOK 1995 (14089801).

First off, let me just say that the color of this whisky is mesmerizing! It’s like a deep red sunset merged with dark mahogany and an ancient cognac.

Nose: Ooh, I have to sit up straight for this, that’s obvious. Refined notes of honey, earthy vanilla, toasted oak and furniture polish. It’s deep, warm and welcoming. Sun-warmed leather. Dried fruits in the form of raisins and dates. With time also cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Spicy, cold brewed coffee.

Taste: Full bodied and adventurous. Spicy and exotic. Warm notes of caramel, toasted oak, white pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Also dried fruits - dark and borderline bitter.

Finish: Long finish. More of the same, yet still ever evolving. Wave upon wave. Dark, dry chocolate with succulent jam filling, dried citrus peel, exotic spices and dried herbs.

Comment: A dreamy dervish dance of a whisky!

Score 91/100
