Benrinnes 2001 "Rhubarb Royale" (Wemyss Malts)The independent bottler Wemyss Malts keep releasing single cask whiskies at an impressive tempo. Here is another of their latest releases, launched in March 2015. The Benrinnes 2001 "Rhubarb Royale" was matured in an unspecified hogshead. Distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2014. The total outturn was 425 bottles.

The Benrinnes 2001 "Rhubarb Royale" is not yet available to buy in Norway or Sweden but expect it to appear within a month or two.

Nose (21/25): A distinctly earthy nose. Fallen leaves, ripe apples, and a hint of red berries - raspberries perhaps. This is Autumn in a glass. More vanilla and mild fruits after a couple of sniffs. Fresh licorice. Leave it in the glass for a bit. A shy teenager. A hint of acetone.

Taste (21/25): The immediate delivery is peppery and warm. Unusually warm at its core. Full and rich mouthfeel. To taste it is dominated mainly by pepper and banana. Mild caramel swirls with tiny fruits drops mixed in for added flavor.

Finish (20/25): Warm and of medium length. White pepper and caramel. Fresh licorice minus the sweetness.

Balance (21/25): A balanced dram that brings stability and calmness, rather than funky action.

Score (83/100)
